FIJI

The work of the Australian Churches of Christ began in Fiji in 1993 at Suva. The intention was always to reach especially the Indian population of Fiji with the Gospel, since the Melanesian Fijians were already well catered for.
The work was initially established in the Suva suburb of Nakasi which has a large concentration of Indian residents. A second church was established in the rural area on the edge of Suva at Vuci South, Nausori, and then a new church was established at Vatuwaqa. On the western side of the island a church was established at Lautoka, with neighbouring churches also being established at Vitogo and Ba.
Fiji has been a truly cross-cultural mission field with missionaries from Australia, India, Vanuatu and PNG serving God there. It has also been encouraging to see a steady growth in the local Indo-Fijians undertaking the Train and Multiply course to begin pastoring new churches. The Bible Training Institute Way of Truth Bible Corespondence courses continue to attract a wide-range of students including prisoners and Muslims.
The oversight of the work in Fiji is very capably directed by Pastor Bhimrao Thavare, who came to faith while attending the Baramati Boys' Home run by Churches of Christ in Western India.
Bhimrao is training local pastors to be the pastors of the local churches.
